Project Guidelines
The goal of this project was to create an assemblage sculpture that incorporated the principles of design. The sculpture could be based on a narrative that was used from the previous project.
Process
The narrative that this piece is based off of is The Tell-Tale Heart from Edgar Allen Poe. From the beginning I was intent on playing around with the concept of the pale blue eye that drove the protagonist to madness; it was clear what my subject matter would be. The materials used were completely up to me, so I went through a few different ideations of materials that would best suit this task. My instructor showed me a video of how to make a realistic SFX eye prop, so I followed that.
Using white thermoplastic beads, I melted a handful of them in hot water, clumped them together and formed a ball in my hand. I glued a blue-colored iris the the ball to look like the eye from the short story. As the ball was hardening, but not completely firm yet, I stuck several bamboo skewers into it. The skewers were already painted at this point, the yellow representing the glow of the lantern and the red representing the erratic, violent endeavor of the protagonist. After that, I coated the eyeball in a layer of a clearn nail polish, added some red thread to create the veins in a bloodshot eye, and then added a couple more layers of nail polish to solidify that "wet" look.
This fits the wildcard category because I took a well known narrative and took a different perspective from it to be my subject matter. The Tell-Tale Heart is often illustrated as the heart that could be heard under the floorboards, but I wanted to focus on the initial action itself in my piece. I wanted to depict the irrationality, the madness, and the act of The Tell-Tale Heart, so I felt that portraying the call to madness was best fitting.
